Laurie's Second Surgery (Jan. 20, 2006)
Laurie's second surgery to remove additional tissue surrounding the tumor site began at 7:20 a.m. She was finished by 8:00 a.m. Dr. Knox said the procedure went well. Laurie was not fully anesthetized this morning. Instead she was put in "twilight sleep". Her recovery from the procedure was much quicker, and she followed her trip home with a take-out breakfast from Cracker Barrel provided by her parents. Laurie is feeling much better and appears eager to take on the day, although Jim is probably going to require a nap. :-)
The next step in the process takes place on Tuesday afternoon, Jan. 24, when Laurie and Jim will meet with her medical oncologist (drug doctor), Dr. Joyce O'Shaughnesy. That's when more information will be presented on the possibilities of chemotherapy.

You, Jim, and the girls will continue to be in our prayers! "The joy of the Lord is your strength!" God's will be done.

Laurie, Jim and precious girls,
We cannot always know what God is up to but experience has shown me that His greatest achievements come through adversity. My daughters are evidence of that very fact. I pray for God's grace to cover all of you during this time but especially the girls. The evil one will want to use it against them but as they look to the cross for their comfort, they will also come to know the sovereign God in a more personal way who can work great good into their lives through this adversity that will serve them for a lifetime. Please know that we are praying just that for all of you and our hearts are with you!
Trusting His faithfulness,
Cheri

Laurie,
I am glad that the surgery went well! I was the nurse clinician at Baylor Breast Center when it was Komen. I worked closely with Sally Knox and she is wonderful! How comforting to know that your surgeon is praying for you as well,as she is a woman of God! If you have any questions, please feel free to call Ed or I (Ed is a surgeon). Rachel and Rebecca send their love.
Love,
Kelly Franko
Hey Lauie--
First of all I have to say that (after reading your blog entries)it does not surprise me that 32 people showed up at the hospital on the day of your surgery! I would have expected NOTHING less!
I hope you know how many people are praying for you, Jim and the girls daily. We've added a few more classmates to our email list because they were forwarded the original email about your surgery. The class of 80 will be on the journey with you!
Trusting the Lord with you,
Nancy Ruark
Dear Mrs. Thames,
Thank you for the note and I hope you feel better. I am at home sick today too. And I can't wait to see you. I miss you and pray for you every night. I love you!
